### What does NPN stand for?

NPN stands for National Producer Number. It is a unique permanent identifier assigned by the NAIC to every licensed insurance producer in the United States, individuals and agencies alike.

### Where can I look up an NPN for free?

The official NIPR NPN Lookup at nipr.com/help/look-up-your-npn is free and returns NPNs immediately based on name and date of birth (individuals) or business name and FEIN (agencies).

### Does my NPN change if I move states?

No. Your NPN is permanent and follows you for life. Adding non-resident licenses in additional states does not change your NPN.

### What's the difference between an NPN and a license number?

Your license number is issued by each state and changes from state to state. Your NPN is a single national identifier issued by the NAIC that stays the same across every state license you hold.

### Do agencies need an NPN?

Yes. Agencies receive their own business-entity NPN, distinct from each individual producer's NPN. Carriers appoint both — the agency NPN holds the contract and the individual NPN identifies the writing agent.

### How long does it take to get an NPN after passing the state exam?

Once your state issues your first license, the NAIC typically assigns your NPN within 24–72 hours. The NPN is then visible in the NIPR lookup tool.
