Everyone wants to talk about AI. Nobody wants to talk about carrier integrations. But here's the truth: our AI is only as good as the data it has access to. And that data comes from 1,252 carrier integrations that took years to build.

## Why Carrier Integrations Are Hard

### There's No Standard API

Unlike FinTech (which has Plaid for bank connections), insurance has no universal API standard. Each carrier has their own:

- API format (REST, SOAP, flat files, or no API at all)
- Authentication method (OAuth, API keys, username/password, certificate-based)
- Rate structure format (different carriers describe the same product differently)
- Update frequency (some update rates daily, others quarterly)

For 200+ carriers, we built integrations without any API — scraping rate sheets, processing PDFs, or building direct data partnerships.

Insurance carriers view their rate data as competitive intelligence. Many are reluctant to share it with technology platforms. Each integration required:

- Business development conversations explaining the mutual benefit
- Compliance agreements for data handling and display
- Technical specifications (often poorly documented)
- Ongoing relationship management for updates and issues

### The Long Tail Problem

The first 100 carriers were relatively straightforward — they're large, tech-forward companies with APIs. Carriers 101-500 required significantly more effort. Carriers 501-1,252 were the hardest: smaller regional carriers, niche product providers, and carriers with zero technology infrastructure.

But these long-tail carriers matter. A Medicare Supplement agent in rural Nebraska might work primarily with carriers that aren't in the top 100. If our platform doesn't have their carriers, it doesn't matter how good our AI is.

## The Integration Architecture

Each carrier integration has four components:

### 1. Data Adapter
Translates the carrier's data format into our normalized schema. This is the most labor-intensive component — every carrier is different.

### 2. Rate Engine
Processes the carrier's rate tables and applies them to client-specific inputs (age, state, tobacco status, etc.). Some carriers provide calculators; most provide raw rate tables that we process ourselves.

### 3. Availability Engine
Determines which products are available in which states, for which age ranges, and under what conditions. This data changes frequently as carriers enter and exit markets.

### 4. Update Monitor
Continuously checks for rate changes, product updates, and availability changes. Our pipeline processes 10,000+ updates monthly across all carriers.

## The Competitive Moat

Building 1,252 carrier integrations took years and millions of dollars in engineering time. A competitor starting today would need:

- 3-5 years to build equivalent carrier relationships
- A dedicated team of 10+ engineers for integration maintenance
